Ellis Maples, 1909-1984, was born in Pinehurst , North Carolina. He began working at the age of 14 for his father, Frank Maples, a longtime construction superintendent for Donald Ross and greenskeeper at Pinehurst Country Club. Ellis worked as assistant greenskeeper to his father at Midpines and Pine Needles, two Pinehurst area courses until 1937. He held the position of pro superintendents at Raleigh Country Club until 1953, when he decided to enter private practice as a golf course architect. Ellis Maple's firm handled over seventy course design projects in six different states, including Grandfather Golf and Country Club, The Country Club of North Carolina and Pinehurst No. 5.
